Early Life

  • Born August 25, 1919
  • Died September 13, 1998
  • He was born in Clio, Alabama
  • The son of a farmer, he had two brothers; Jack and Gerald, and a sister; Marianne.
  • His parents were George Corley Wallace, and Mozell Smith Wallace.
  • George was fascinated with politics at the age of ten, and claimed he'd be the governor someday.
  • He went directly to law school at the University of Alabama upon graduating.
  • He was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity.
  • He enrolled in the army, and served under General Curtis Lemay, who would later be his running mate.
  • He fought in Japan, but came down with spinal meningitis, and was given leave.

Politics

*In 1945 he became the assistant attorney general of Alabama, and won his first election the the Alabama House of Representatives in 1946.
  • He was elected Circuit Judge in the Third Judicial Circuit of Alabama.
*In 1958, he ran for governor but was defeated by John Patterson.
*In 1962, George Wallace was elected governor, in quite the victory.
